Key takeaways

  • Readiness is about data, processes, and people—not just technology.
  • A clear, high-value use case beats a vague ambition to 'use AI'.
  • Score each dimension honestly to find what to fix before you build.

AI projects rarely fail because the model wasn't smart enough. They fail because the business wasn't ready—unclear goals, inaccessible data, or a process no one actually follows. This assessment covers the five dimensions that predict whether your AI implementation will succeed.

1. Use case clarity

Can you name a specific, valuable problem in one sentence? 'Cut the time to answer support tickets in half' is ready. 'Leverage AI across the organization' is not. The narrower and more valuable the use case, the higher your odds.

2. Data readiness

AI runs on your data. Ask: is the data that would power this use case accessible, reasonably clean, and allowed to be used? You don't need perfect data—but you need to know where it lives and who owns it.

  • Is the relevant data in systems you can connect to?
  • Is it accurate and current enough to trust?
  • Are there privacy or compliance constraints on using it?

3. Process maturity

Automation amplifies whatever process it's applied to. If the underlying process is inconsistent or undocumented, automating it just produces inconsistency faster. A process that's stable enough to describe in steps is a process you can automate.

4. People and adoption

The best tool is worthless if no one uses it. Consider who will work alongside the AI, whether they trust it, and what would make their day easier. Involving the people who do the work is the difference between adoption and abandonment.

Technology is rarely the blocker. Clarity, data, and buy-in are.

5. Success metrics

Define what winning looks like before you build. Hours saved, error rates, response times, revenue influenced—pick the number you'll move and measure it today so you have a baseline to beat.

How to score yourself

Rate each dimension from 1 (not ready) to 5 (fully ready). Anything scoring a 1 or 2 is where to focus first—often a quick data cleanup or a tighter use case unlocks the whole project. You don't need straight fives to start; you need honesty about what to shore up.

Ready to find your starting point?

Most businesses are more ready than they think for a focused first project, and less ready than they hope for a sweeping transformation. A short readiness assessment turns that uncertainty into a concrete, prioritized plan.
